Fashion shapes us - Style defines us

1920's - The Flapper era: Bobbed hair, close to the head hats with a dash - sequins or a feather. The clothing reflects a new spirit with slimline silhouette, flattened bosom, dropped waistlines, demure, strappy shoes.

1930's - From Hollywood body draping fluid fabrics to re-purposing men's slacks and jackets and shirts into feminine designs. Skirts were worn every day. Depression era clothing is rare. Every piece of fabric was used for remaking wardrobes.

1940's - World War II and the military look appealed, again, less fabric - so the women wanted to look as great as the guys in their uniforms; leading to jackets with padded shoulders and cinched waists. The Hourglass shape a hit in suits and dresses. Women wore crinolines under skirts and gowns.

1950's - From elegant feminine dressing to fun wide skirts, more crinolines, cardigan sweaters and blouses with a focus on the bustline. Saddle oxfords were a staple.

1960's - Early 60's included three-quarter sleeves, A-line silhouette, gloves and matching shoes and handbags for every outfit - right into - Love beads, wide legged pants and wild psychedelic prints arrived.

1970's - Hippie era, early ethnic, later bohemian and peasant styles. Poly hit a new height and women started wearing pant suits to work.

1980's - B I G - Disco - Money - Big hair, shoulder pads, hats, bold prints. Designer jeans, dresses and shades are all the rage. Blunt geometric styles rule.

1990's - Basic black in everything. Acceptable for play day to evening right into weddings. More designers with brights and bolds - Gold touches on clothes and jewels. Tight jeans are the rage. Big bags go everywhere.

2000's - Bling is in. Microfibers add stretch to clothing and a soft, liquid drape. Black continues to be strong. Ethnic prints and travel wear for men and women. Silver is the rage. Designers add accessories to every thing.

2010's - Wow! Seems like Vintage style and Retro feel are in! Designers are mixing the 80's and 90's and softening the look. Women want to show their style. Got to have an IT bag and coat!
